US-based group criticises South-East leaders over silence on convicted IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu

A United States–based advocacy organisation, Ambassadors for Self Determination USA, has criticised political leaders from Nigeria’s South-East region over what it describes as a lack of visible and coordinated advocacy regarding the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

In a statement issued from Washington, D.C., the group reacted to recent public remarks attributed to Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, in which he referenced the federal government’s position on separatist agitations, reports Daily Independent. Ambassadors for Self Determination USA said the comments reflected what it views as the federal government’s firm stance against Biafra-related demands and a broader unwillingness to revisit the issue.

The organisation said the remarks highlighted the need for stronger and more unified engagement by South-East political leaders. “Statements from senior government officials continue to show that there is little inclination at the center to reconsider its approach,” the group said, adding that regional leaders have not demonstrated a collective strategy capable of influencing the situation.

Ambassadors for Self Determination USA argued that the absence of a unified political position from elected officials in the South-East has weakened advocacy efforts and reduced international attention on Kanu’s case.

“When those elected to represent the region fail to speak with one voice, it becomes difficult to generate the level of pressure required for meaningful dialogue,” the group stated.

The advocacy group also pointed to broader governance challenges in parts of the South-East, including economic disruptions and recurring tensions linked to protests and enforcement measures.

According to the group, decisions affecting daily economic life should be handled through inclusive dialogue to avoid further strain between authorities and residents.

“Policies imposed without broad public engagement risk deepening mistrust and prolonging instability,” the statement said.

Looking ahead, Ambassadors for Self Determination USA urged residents of the region to remain committed to peaceful and lawful civic engagement, particularly as Nigeria approaches future elections.

The group encouraged voters to assess leadership performance and accountability, noting that “sustainable political progress depends on unity, transparency, and consistent advocacy.”

The organisation concluded by reaffirming its support for non-violent efforts to address long-standing political grievances and called for renewed dialogue focused on justice, inclusion, and respect for the rights of affected communities.
