Works Minister Umahi re-opens Independence Bridge after Lagos traffic chaos

•Dave Umahi

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has reopened the Independence Bridge located on Victoria Island following the massive traffic gridlock that enveloped the Ikoyi area of Lagos.

The Independence Bridge is a critical component of Lagos’s road network, serving as a major gateway for both private and commercial transportation within the city, reports The Nation.

It was observed that remedial measures to reopen the bridge for vehicular traffic have been carried out.

The bridge was reopened around 1:00pm today, Friday, April 4.

Addressing journalists in Lagos today, Umahi said permanent work on the bridge will commence in three weeks.

The minister said the contractors worked overnight to ensure that the bridge was ready for use.

Umahi acknowledged the importance of the bridge, which links Victoria Island to other key parts of Lagos, and apologized for the inconvenience caused by the temporary closure.

Umahi said: “We worked throughout the night to restore this. We will start permanent work in the next three weeks.”
