Xenophobia attacks: South Africa set to verify Nigerians, other foreigners in immigration status review

The FrontierThe FrontierMay 23, 2026 600 Minutes read0

•South African President Cyril Ramaphosa

Authorities in South Africa have reportedly initiated a verification exercise involving foreign nationals, including Nigerians, as part of efforts to review immigration status and compliance with residency regulations.

The exercise, which has sparked concerns among affected communities, is being carried out under a broader administrative process aimed at ensuring proper documentation and lawful stay of foreign residents within the municipality.

Some Nigerians impacted by the development were said to have been temporarily moved for screening and verification procedures, raising fresh conversations about immigration enforcement and the treatment of foreign nationals in the country.

While officials maintain that the process is routine administrative enforcement, critics argue that such actions risk escalating tensions and reinforcing concerns over xenophobic treatment of African migrants in South Africa.

The development has once again brought attention to the longstanding issue of migration, documentation, and the safety of foreign nationals living in parts of the country where sporadic tensions have previously been reported.

Diplomatic observers say the situation underscores the need for clearer communication and humane handling of immigration enforcement to avoid misinterpretations and potential diplomatic strain between affected countries.
