YABATECH mourns student shot dead outside campus

The FrontierThe FrontierMarch 6, 2026 1431 Minutes read0

Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of one of its students who was shot outside the institution’s premises on Tuesday.

The Rector of YABATECH, Dr Ibraheem Abdul, in a statement yesterday, described the incident as tragic and extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased student.

Abdul said the unfortunate development had caused grief within the college community and among fellow students.

He emphasised that the incident occurred outside the college premises.

He, however, urged the public to avoid spreading unverified claims, saying that preliminary witness reports showed no indication the incident was cult-related.

“The management, on behalf of the Governing Council, staff and students, described the incident as tragic and extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased student yesterday.

“The institution also prayed for the repose of the student’s soul, noting that the unfortunate development has caused grief within the college community and among fellow students nationwide,” he said.

He said the victim was a National Diploma Business Administration student in the Open Distance and Flexible e-Learning programme of the college community.

“Witnesses said the student had left the campus with a friend and proceeded to WAEC bus stop along Herbert Macaulay Road to board transport towards the Mainland area.

“While attempting to board a commercial tricycle, popularly called ‘Marwa’, a sudden gunshot was heard, causing panic among traders, transport workers and other commuters nearby at the park.

“Bystanders immediately raised alarm and rushed the victim to the nearby Military Hospital for emergency treatment where he was unfortunately confirmed dead shortly after arrival by attending doctors.

“Upon receiving the report, the college management visited the scene and contacted relevant security agencies to ensure prompt investigation into circumstances surrounding the shooting and possible perpetrators involved.

“Eyewitnesses, including traders, drivers and passengers at the bus park, reportedly said there was no altercation or confrontation before the single gunshot was heard by those present there,” he said.

The rector, however, appealed for calm and assured that the institution would continue to work with police and other authorities to strengthen security within and around the college community henceforth.
