2 women nabbed attempting to sell newborn twin babies in Lagos

•The suspects with the babies

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two women, Ujunwa Una, and Chinelo Igbechionwu, for conspiracy and child trafficking in an attempt to sell two newborn baby girls.

The suspects were apprehended by patrol officers from the Ojodu Division, stationed at Berger bus stop, a major entry point into Lagos, reports The Nation.

According to police reports, Una and Igbechionwu were travelling from Abia State to Lagos on September 9, 2024, when they were intercepted with the six-day-old twins.

The arrest was made after a good samaritan alerted the authorities.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the two women were acting as couriers, transporting the babies to a nurse in Lagos as arranged by the twins’ mother.

The suspects confessed to receiving ₦150,000 for their involvement, stating that the mother sold the babies because she could not care for them.

The case has been transferred to the gender unit of the Lagos State Police Command, while the newborns are currently in the custody of a motherless babies home, where they are receiving medical care.

The police said the investigation continues to track down other individuals involved in the conspiracy. Una and Igbechionwu were arraigned in court on Thursday, September 19, 2024.

SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police Public Relations Officer for Lagos State, confirmed the arrest and assured all involved in the crime would be brought to justice.
