2027: Peter Obi’s one-term promise as President is for Nigeria’s unity – Obidient Movement

The FrontierThe FrontierApril 15, 2026 422 Minutes read0

•Peter Obi

The Obidient Movement has reaffirmed that Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, will serve only one term if elected President in 2027.

Obi, who is now a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and among the leading aspirants seeking the party’s presidential ticket, has repeatedly maintained that his commitment to a single four-year term remains sacrosanct, reports Daily Independent.

He said the decision is rooted in his vision of delivering impactful and accountable leadership within a limited timeframe.

Despite the assurance, some Nigerians have expressed skepticism, noting that no Nigerian president has voluntarily relinquished power after just one term.

Speaking with our correspondent, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, described Obi as a trustworthy and principled leader who would not renege on his promise.

“We believe Peter Obi is the right person to lead Nigeria at this point. He is a very sincere and a rare breed of a politician whose word is his bond. He did not only promise Obidients, he also said it to the whole world that if elected, he would serve only one term,” Tanko said.

He added that Obi’s pledge reflects a commitment to rebuilding trust in Nigeria’s political system, where many citizens have grown disillusioned due to unfulfilled promises by past leaders.

“For us in the Obidient Movement, that is one of the virtues of a credible and trustworthy leader. Once he tells you something, you can rest assured that he will not go back on his word,” he stated.

Tanko further noted that the movement supports the principle of power rotation, stressing that the South should complete its turn after the North’s eight-year presidency under Muhammadu Buhari.

“We recognise that the 2027 election is for the southern presidency for the remaining four years. The northern region had eight years with the Buhari presidency, and the incumbent has almost completed four years. Obi believes strongly in the unity of this country, which is why he pledged to serve only one term,” he said.

According to him, Obi is confident that four years is sufficient for a focused administration to implement meaningful reforms and address systemic challenges facing the country.

“He believes four years is enough for any serious leader to make an appreciable impact and correct many of the decays in the system. Nigerians should rest assured that he will remain true to his words. He will serve one term, and Nigerians will not regret voting for him,” Tanko added.

The statement comes amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Obi emerging as a key figure in the evolving opposition landscape.
