Police arrest suspected vandal on Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, recover 20 road studs

•Third Mainland Bridge

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested an 18-year-old suspected vandal for allegedly tampering with road safety infrastructure on the Third Mainland Bridge.

The suspect, identified as Dogara John, was apprehended by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) on April 6, 2026, at about 5:30 p.m. while reportedly removing reflective road studs installed on the bridge, reports The Guardian.

Police sources disclosed that the suspect was caught in the act during routine patrol operations aimed at protecting critical public infrastructure across the state. A search conducted at the scene led to the recovery of 20 reflective road studs found in his possession.

The road studs, which are strategically installed to enhance visibility and guide motorists, especially at night and during adverse weather conditions, are considered vital to road safety. Their removal, authorities warned, poses a serious risk to commuters on the heavily trafficked bridge.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance stance on vandalism and the destruction of public infrastructure.

He noted that such acts not only endanger lives but also undermine ongoing efforts to maintain safety and order across Lagos State.

The commissioner urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, particularly around public infrastructure, to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency lines.

The police also reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding lives and property, warning that perpetrators of vandalism would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
