6 signs you’ve been hired by a toxic boss

The FrontierThe FrontierApril 18, 2025 2941 Minutes read0

Getting a new job is exciting, but working for a toxic boss can quickly turn that excitement into stress. A bad boss can make the workplace unbearable, affecting your productivity, mental health, and career growth, reports Nigerian Tribune.

Before it’s too late, some of these signs listed will tell you have either been hired by a toxic boss, or…you’re one of them:

1. They Disrespect Boundaries

A toxic boss doesn’t respect personal time. They expect you to work late without notice, reply to messages outside office hours, and sacrifice your well-being for the job.

If your boss constantly invades your personal space and demands 24/7 availability, it’s a warning sign.

2. They Take Credit for Your Work

If your boss frequently presents your ideas as their own or takes credit for your hard work, you’re dealing with a toxic boss. Instead of acknowledging your contributions, they make it seem like they did all the work while you get little to no recognition.

3. They Use Fear to Control Employees

A toxic boss leads through intimidation rather than motivation. They make threats about job security, humiliate employees in meetings, and create a culture of fear. If you constantly feel on edge or afraid to make mistakes, this is a sign of a toxic work environment.

4. They Micromanage Everything

Instead of trusting their employees, a toxic boss wants to control every little detail. They hover over you, constantly check your work, and don’t give you room to make decisions. This lack of trust can lower your confidence and make work frustrating.

5. They Never Take Responsibility

Instead of owning up to their mistakes, a toxic boss always blames others. If something goes wrong, they shift the blame to employees instead of accepting responsibility. They refuse to admit when they’re wrong and expect others to cover for them.

6. They Don’t Communicate Clearly

A toxic boss gives vague instructions, constantly changes their mind, or expects employees to read their minds. Poor communication leads to confusion, mistakes, and unnecessary stress. If you’re always guessing what your boss wants, that’s a major red flag.

A toxic boss can make work unbearable, but recognizing the signs early can help you decide your next steps. If you find yourself dealing with any of these issues, consider setting boundaries or looking for a healthier work environment.
