Conjoined twins: Why we didn’t separate Abby, Brittany — Parents

The FrontierThe FrontierMarch 30, 2024 5321 Minutes read0

•Abby and Brittany

The parents of conjoined twins Abby and Brittany Hensel have opened up about why Abby and Brittany were not separated, even when faced with the option after their birth.

Patty and Mike decided not to separate them because professionals warned them that there was little chance that both twins could survive.

During an interview with Time Magazine in 2001, Mike said, “How could you pick between the two?” Ultimately, they opted against the surgery, prioritising the well-being of both daughters over the inherent risks.

Abby and Brittany are dicephalus-conjoined twins. They share a bloodstream and all organs below the waist, each possessing its own head, heart, stomach, spine, and lungs.

They navigate life with two arms and legs shared between them, with Abby controlling the right side and Brittany the left.

Growing up, Abby and Brittany learned to do things together. They can do some things separately, like eating and writing, but they have to work together for other things that need both arms or legs. They’ve learned to drive, play the piano, ride bikes, and even participate in sports together.

Abby and Brittany, now 34, have captured public fascination, especially with the recent revelation that Abby quietly married nurse and US Army veteran Josh Bowling three years ago.

Remarkably, Abby and Brittany have mastered driving, playing the piano, riding bikes, and participating in sports by coordinating their movements.

Their remarkable journey has garnered global attention, with appearances on television shows like The Oprah Winfrey Show and documentaries such as Joined for Life and Joined at Birth, endearing them to audiences worldwide.
