7 things to know about Hezbollah’s new leader, Naim Qassem

The FrontierThe FrontierOctober 30, 2024 4001 Minutes read0

Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement has announced the appointment of Sheikh Naim Qassem as the group’s new secretary general following the death of its former leader, Hasan Nasrallah, in an Israeli airstrike last month.

Hezbollah, in a statement yesterday, confirmed that Qassem, who was the deputy head of the group, will now lead the movement, reports Nigerian Tribune.

Below are seven key things you should know about the new leader of Hezbollah:

1. One of Hezbollah’s Founders

Qassem, 71, is a founding member of Hezbollah, which was established in 1982. His involvement with the group has spanned over four decades.

2. Long-Serving Deputy

He has served as Hezbollah’s deputy secretary general since 1991, a year before Nasrallah assumed leadership of the group.

3. Family Background

Qassem was born in Beirut in 1953, but his family hails from the village of Kfar Fila, located near the Israeli border, a region known for its strategic importance in the conflict.

4. Public Figure Amid Security Risks

Unlike Nasrallah, who withdrew from public life after Hezbollah’s 2006 war with Israel, Qassem continued making public appearances, becoming a familiar face of the movement.

5. Leadership Transition

Following Nasrallah’s death in the massive Israeli airstrike on 27 September, Qassem has made three televised addresses, projecting authority during the group’s leadership transition.

6. Oratory Style

In his speeches, Qassem has employed more formal Arabic compared to Nasrallah’s preference for colloquial Lebanese, reflecting his distinctive communication approach.

7. Strategic Importance of Leadership

Qassem’s appointment signals continuity within Hezbollah, as his deep experience and long-standing position within the group make him a stabilising figure during turbulent times.
