Medical negligence: Family seeks justice after multiple surgeries leave daughter in critical condition

The FrontierThe FrontierNovember 27, 2024 2042 Minutes read0

•Badirat Adebayo

A resident of the Ipapo community in Itesiwaju Local Government Area of Oyo State, Badirat Adebayo, is enduring severe pain and health complications following three surgeries conducted within a month on her without the standard medical tests expected from a licensed practitioner.

Since undergoing these surgeries, Badirat’s health has significantly deteriorated, prompting her family to appeal for intervention from both federal and state authorities, as well as relevant global organisations.

According to family members in an interview with our correspondent today, the hospital owner and the attending physician diagnosed Badirat with fibroids without conducting the necessary medical assessments, reports Vanguard.

They claimed the doctor verbally informed them of the diagnosis and insisted on urgent surgery due to the size of the fibroids, which he claimed could lead to complications.

The family members disclosed that Badirat was initially was taken to the private hospital in Ipapo after experiencing abdominal pain and weakness.

However, the family soon noticed troubling behaviour from the doctor, who was evasive and reluctant to provide clear updates on her condition.

The situation worsened after the first surgery, which the family alleged was not fully explained or authorised.

They expressed concerns that the doctor may have removed an organ, possibly her womb, without their consent.

While medical authorities have yet to confirm or deny this possibility, they have stated that an ultrasound could clarify the status of Badirat’s womb.

The doctor in question has since been arrested and is under investigation by the Oyo State Police Command.

While recounting his harrowing journey, Badirat’s father, Mr. Taiwo Adebayo, said: “We reached Adeoyo General Hospital after my daughter had three surgeries with no improvement.”

“She was initially taken to the hospital in Ipapo after complaining of stomach pain. The doctor claimed she needed surgery for fibroids, but when her husband sought my approval before proceeding, the doctor insisted that life was more important than money.”

Despite their concerns, the family was pressured into consenting to the procedures.

After multiple surgeries, during which they paid substantial sums for treatment, Badirat’s condition continued to decline.

They said the doctor eventually referred them to another private hospital, where troubling news emerged regarding the possible removal of her womb.

The family’s ordeal has drawn attention to similar cases within the community, with other residents sharing their experiences of medical negligence.

Also, Mrs. Adesokan Veronica Bimbola in an interview with our correspondent said that her husband died shortly after a procedure by the same doctor, while another resident, Monsurat Paul, lost her mother under similar circumstances.

In response to these alarming reports, the Oyo State government has shut down the private hospital in Ipapo pending further investigation.

The Oyo State Police Command is actively investigating the claims surrounding Badirat’s treatment and the broader issue of medical malpractice in the area.

A consultant and orthopedic surgeon at Adeoyo General Hospital, where Badirat is currently receiving care, Dr. Adeoye Allen Taylor, explained that she is being treated for an enterocutaneous fistula, an abnormal connection between the intestine and the skin.

He assured that she is receiving comprehensive medical attention and emphasised the importance of optimising her health before proceeding with surgery.

Dr. Taylor stated, “She presented with a diagnosis of enterocutaneous fistula, which developed as a complication from her previous surgeries. We are working to ensure she is fit for surgery, as her recovery depends on her overall health status.”

Meanwhile, the Adebayo family continues to seek justice for Badirat, urging authorities to investigate not only her case but also the troubling practices of the medical professionals involved.
