Pandemonium broke out, yesterday when a truck crushed a yet-to-be-identified pedestrian to death, at the Iyana-Isashi U-turn, inward Mile 2 area of Lagos State.

This is coming less than 24 hours, when a similar incident occurred with a pedestrian crushed to death and five others rushed to hospital for treatment in the early hours of Monday, following a collision involving two vehicles at Ilubirin, inward Sura, along the Lagos Third Mainland Bridge of the state, reports Vanguard.

The latest incident, involving a fully loaded Howo tipper, with unknown registration, according to an eyewitness, Mr. John Adebiyi, occurred about 11a.m.

Miscreants seized the opportunity to cause mayhem, threatening to set the ill fated truck ablaze.

It took the intervention of personnel of the Nigeria Police, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC officials, to restore normalcy to the area.

According to LASTMA report, preliminary findings showed that the Howo truck, in an attempt to navigate through traffic while on top speed, suffered a brake failure, resulting in a complete loss of vehicular control.

General Manager, LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, narrated that, “The out-of-control vehicle tragically veered off its path and struck an unknown innocent pedestrian walking along the roadside, causing instantaneous fatality.

“Swift intervention from FRSC officials, in collaboration with LASTMA operatives, ensured effective management of the incident.

“Security reinforcement was promptly provided by officers from the Ishasi Police Division to facilitate the ongoing rescue operation.”

Bakare-Oki, expressed sorrow over the tragic incident.

He extended his condolences to the bereaved family, praying for divine fortitude to withstand the irreplaceable loss.

Bakare-Oki reiterated the imperative for all motorists to uphold safety-consciousness at all times.

He underscored the need for meticulous vehicle maintenance and strict adherence to traffic regulations to avert such avoidable tragedies.

Meanwhile, the remains of the deceased have been deposited at General Hospital, Igando, for further action.
