Community protests release of murder suspect by police boss

The FrontierThe FrontierJanuary 2, 2025 2261 Minutes read0

A petition has been submitted to the Commissioner of Police in Borno State by the Marama community in Hawul Local Government Area, protesting the release of a murder suspect by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO).

The suspect, James Musa, allegedly attacked and fatally wounded a security guard, Henry Musa, on December 17, 2024, at the Government Secondary School Marama, reports Daily Independent.

According to the petition, signed by Mdahyelya Buba Yirngau and Samuel Bwala, Secretary and Chairman of the Marama Community Development Association, the victim was rushed to the General Hospital, Biu, while the suspect was arrested and detained.

However, community members noticed the suspect moving freely in the town a few days later, while the victim struggled for survival in the hospital.

The victim eventually died on December 26, 2024, and the suspect was re-arrested. The community is seeking an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s initial release and is calling for him to be charged appropriately.

The DPO, Habila Lemak CSP, confirmed the development but claimed that he released the suspect after five days because he refused to eat and the victim was not dead at the time. He stated that efforts are being made to transfer the matter to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Maiduguri.

The community has also forwarded their complaints to the Public Complaints Commission (PCC) to prevent any attempts by the police to dismiss the matter.

The community’s actions demonstrate their commitment to seeking justice for the victim and his family. The police authorities are expected to take prompt action on the matter to ensure that justice is served.

The Borno State Police Command has assured the public that the matter will be thoroughly investigated, and appropriate actions will be taken.

The Command has also urged the community to remain calm and cooperative as they work to ensure justice is served.
