Tinubu to attend inauguration of John Mahama as Ghana President

President Bola Tinubu will depart Lagos today to attend the inauguration of President-elect John Dramani Mahama.

The event, which is billed to hold tomorrow, Tuesday, January 7 in Accra, the capital of the Republic of Ghana, is at the behest of the incoming President John Mahama.

Recall that Mahama, who had previously served as the 12th president of Ghana between 2011 and 2017, found his way back to power through a re-election in December 2024.

He is expected to succeed President Nana Akuffo-Addo (2017-2025).

Mahama shortly after his election had visited President Tinubu earlier in December.

A statement by Tinubu’s media aide, Bayo Onanuga, noted that Mahama and President Tinubu have a longstanding personal relationship, akin to what Nigeria and Ghana shares through their bilateral relationship.

The statement also noted that President Tinubu, as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, will join other African leaders at the ceremony.

“Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu and other senior government officials will accompany President Tinubu on the trip,” the statement by Onanuga added.

Recall that Mahama was declared winner of the polls as Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia conceded defeat, and extended felicitations to former President John Mahama.

“The people of Ghana have spoken, the people have voted for change at this time and we respect it with all humility,” Bawumia had stated while conceding defeat.

The outcome of the election ends two terms in power for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) under President Nana Akufo-Addo, which some analysts said marked Ghana’s worst economic crisis in years, involving high inflation and a debt default.
