Despite calling Atiku ‘Baba’, I’ll aim jabs at him in 2027 – Vice President Shettima

The FrontierThe FrontierFebruary 7, 2025 2881 Minutes read0

•Shettima and Atiku

Vice President Kashim Shettima has told former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to expect more political jabs from him in the run-up to the 2027 general elections, despite the respect he has for him.

Shettima made the remark humorously yesterday while recognising dignitaries at a symposium in Abuja to commemorate the 60th birthday of Kayode Fayemi, former governor of Ekiti State.

While acknowledging Atiku as one of the dignitaries at the event, Shettima recalled his role during the 2023 presidential election, describing himself as an “adjunct provocateur” who took “hot shots” at Atiku, reports Daily Trust.

However, he noted that Atiku, as an elder statesman, had taken the criticisms calmly.

Shettima revealed that, in private conversations, he normally addresses Atiku as “Baba,” a colloquial term for father.

He added, however, that come 2027, Atiku should expect more shots from him.

This comment prompted laughter from the audience, with Atiku himself managing a smile.

Atiku, who contested the 2023 presidential election against President Bola Tinubu and Shettima, has been in the news recently with his allegation that their administration was undermining democracy and attempting to weaken opposition parties.

He also accused the presidency of offering N50 million to opposition parties to dilute their influence. He reiterated his call to all opposition parties and leaders to close ranks to form a coalition to unseat Tinubu-led administration in 2027.

Meanwhile, during his speech at the event, Shettima appealed to all the leaders to unite, irrespective of their political divides.

“The trajectory of global growth is facing Africa, and Nigeria must make or break that future. Nigeria must work for Africa to work. I beg all our leaders here, let’s unite for the common good of our people,” he said.
