Crime: Reps order crackdown on fake number plate users

The FrontierThe FrontierFebruary 20, 2025 3261 Minutes read0

•House of Representatives

The House of Representatives has directed the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to commence the arrest and prosecution of individuals using fake vehicle number plates across the country.

This resolution was passed following the adoption of a motion sponsored by Hon. Matthew Nwogu, who represents Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpala Federal Constituency in Imo State, during today’s plenary, reports Daily Independent.

The primary purpose of vehicle plate numbers is to facilitate easy identification and enable security agencies to trace and track vehicles suspected of involvement in criminal activities.

Recalling an earlier report published on February 7, 2025 by this s paper, Nwogu highlighted a statement by the Lagos State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), who revealed that many fake number plates used in crimes across the country often bear the tags of prestigious institutions such as the Presidency, the Nigeria Youth Council, and the National Association of Nigerian Students.

He further noted that the notorious ‘One Chance’ robbery and kidnapping incidents in Nigeria are frequently linked to the use of fake vehicle plate numbers, with many victims suffering losses, while others tragically lose their lives at the hands of these criminals.

The lawmaker argued that with the current state of insecurity in Nigeria, there is an urgent need to crack down on the use of fake plate numbers which pose a security threat to the citizens.

“The House is concerned that some number plates bearing the Presidency, Nigeria Youth Council, National Association of Nigerian Students and other government agencies are, according to the FRSC Sector Command, Lagos, not registered in the Nigeria Vehicle Registration database,” he added.

Members voted overwhelmingly in support when the motion was subjected to a voice vote.

Following the motion’s adoption, the House urged the FRSC, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, to “Intensify efforts to arrest users of fake plate numbers and ensure that the producers are traced and prosecuted.”

It also urged the two agencies to ensure that only vehicles with registered plate numbers found in the Nigeria Vehicle registration database ply roads in the country.
