Natasha vs Akpabio: Revolution underway, it’s time for women and youths – Activist Abayomi Mighty blows hot

•Abayomi Mighty

Activist and 2027 presidential hopeful, Abayomi Mighty has condemned in strong terms the recent actions and remarks of Senate President Godswill Akpabio towards Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The Frontier reports that the incident in question occurred during a Senate session where Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan protested the uninformed relocation of her seat to a less prominent position. In response, the red chamber under the leadership of the Senate President reportedly retorted: “This place is not for content creation,” a comment Abayomi described as “the most ridiculous statement from a respected institution.

Abayomi Mighty emphasised that such a remark, added to a previous one against Mrs Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan referring to “night club”, are demeaning to all women and young people in the country.

Abayomi also expressed admiration for Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s dedication to her constituents in Kogi Central. He highlighted her numerous developmental projects, including the commissioning of a 50,000-liter water reticulation system designed to serve multiple communities, the reconstruction of the Ihima Police Station to enhance security, and the facilitation of skills acquisition programmes aimed at empowering local residents. These initiatives, according to Abayomi, reflect her commitment to improving the quality of life for her constituents.

In a statement issued yesterday made available to The Frontier, Abayomi Mighty criticised the Senate President’s disregards for the Senate charter which Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan invoked, quoting Order 10 of the Senate Standing Rules, which safeguards members’ privileges, to challenge her seat reassignment. An action he says undermines the democratic principles of representation and stifles the voices of elected officials.

“Despite her objections, Senate President Akpabio directed the Sergeant-at-Arms to remove her from the chamber, leading to a chaotic session.

“To further compound the issue, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has also alleged plans by the Senate leadership to suspend her, a move she perceives as retaliation for her outspoken stance. She voiced these concerns during an interview on Berekete Family Radio, expressing fears of being silenced for representing her constituents’ interests,” he stated.

Abayomi warned that such actions could incite unrest among the youth and women who see her as a beacon of hope and representation.

He also drew attention to reports that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has been excluded from several international delegations and removed from key committees, including the Local Content Committee. He referenced her statements during the Berekete Family Radio interview, where she detailed these exclusions and their potential impact on her legislative effectiveness. He therefore condemned these actions as discriminatory and counterproductive to inclusive governance.

Highlighting a perceived double standard, Abayomi Mighty recalled an incident during the 8th Assembly when then-Senator Akpabio protested a change in his seating arrangement under Senate President Bukola Saraki’s leadership. Abayomi questioned why similar grievances are now being dismissed and met with punitive measures, suggesting a bias against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan.

He emphasised the significance of seating arrangements in the Senate, noting that positions within the chamber can influence a senator’s visibility and ability to contribute effectively to debates. He argued that reassigning Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to a less prominent seat without prior consultation not only disrespects her office but also diminishes her constituents’ representation.

In a show of solidarity, the youthful activist has urged Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to remain steadfast, assuring her that many Nigerians support her cause. He encouraged her to view these challenges as motivation to continue her advocacy for her constituents and to champion the rights of women and youth in governance.

He further asserted that the current political climate indicates a burgeoning revolution, with women and youth poised to take on more significant leadership roles. He called for an end to the marginalisation of these groups, emphasising that their active participation is crucial for the nation’s progress.

Abayomi who is eyeing the topmost political office in the country in 2027 issued a stern warning to the current leadership, stating that the electorates are increasingly disillusioned with outdated and discriminatory practices.

He added that he is poised to change the narrative come 2027 general elections with a coalition driven by young people and women determined to transform the nation’s political landscape.
