EyeCare with Dr Priscilia Imade: Love your eyes

The FrontierThe FrontierOctober 6, 2025 622 Minutes read0

•Dr Priscilia Imade

Welcome to the month of October. Globally, October is set aside for massive eye care awareness creation. It is the world sight month, but this year, the World Sight Day is themed “Love Your Eyes”.

So, this will be our focus for the month, October. We will discuss various ways to love your eyes, where and how to love your eyes.

The World Sight Day celebration takes place every second Thursday in the month of October. This year’s celebration is this week Thursday, October 9, 2025.

INTRODUCTION

World Sight Day is observed every year to remind you of the importance of eye health and the need to prevent avoidable blindness. The theme for World Sight Day 2025 is “Love Your Eyes” with the motto “Every Story Counts.” This theme places you at the centre of eye health by encouraging you to value your sight, share your story, and take proactive steps to protect your vision at every stage of life.

When you think about how to “love your eyes,” you need to consider the different settings and stages of life where your vision matters most. These include your workplace, your school years, your everyday environment, and your older age.

Love Your Eyes at Work reminds you that long hours in front of screens or working in environments that expose your eyes to strain and danger can affect your vision. To protect your sight, you should ensure proper lighting, take regular breaks, and use protective eyewear when needed. By doing this, you safeguard not only your eyes but also your productivity and well-being.

Love Your Eyes at School encourages you to understand how vital good vision is for learning. If you are a student, an undetected vision problem may hold you back in class. Regular eye examinations, limiting your screen time, enjoying outdoor play, and keeping a healthy posture while reading or writing can make a great difference. By caring for your eyes in school, you prepare yourself for greater success in learning and in life.

Love Your Eyes Everywhere teaches you that eye care is not limited to any one place. You can protect your sight by wearing sunglasses against ultraviolet rays, driving only with clear vision, using protective goggles when playing sports or working with sharp tools, and practising proper hygiene with your contact lenses. Loving your eyes means making wise daily choices that prevent damage and keep your vision sharp.

Love Your Eyes at Old Age reminds you that as you grow older, your risk of eye diseases such as cataract, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease increases. To keep your eyes healthy, you should attend regular screenings, eat foods rich in nutrients, follow your doctor’s advice, and use good lighting at home. By doing this, you preserve not only your sight but also your independence and dignity.

CONCLUSION

The 2025 World Sight Day theme, “Love Your Eyes — Every Story Counts,” is a direct call to you. Your story of vision matters, and every action you take to protect your eyes adds to the global effort to reduce avoidable blindness.

By loving your eyes at work, at school, everywhere you go, and in your old age, you give yourself the gift of sight and the opportunity to live life more fully.

Follow us every week this October to read all you need to know about “Loving your eyes “.
