Abuja village head suspended over land dispute

•Abuja City Gate

The Chairman of the Abaji Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Alhaji Abubakar Umar Abdullahi, has suspended the village head of Kache in Gurdi Ward, HRH Alhaji Ismaila Adagi, over an alleged land dispute in the area.

The suspension was communicated in a letter dated January 30, 2026, issued by the council’s secretary, Audu Agaba. A copy of the letter was obtained by our correspondent, reports Daily Trust.

The letter was also copied to the Etsu of Yaba, HRH Alhaji Ibrahim Ndatsusu, the Secretary of the Yaba Development Area, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), the District Head of Gulida and the the village heads of Gulida and Gurdi communities

The Council Chairman noted that the suspension was prompted by a petition against the chief regarding a land dispute situated on the boundary between the FCT and Niger State.

The letter reads in part, “I am directed to notify you of your suspension as the Chief of Kache community in Gurdi Ward of Abaji Area Council, Abuja, following a petition regarding your involvement in a land dispute on the boundary between the FCT and Niger State. Your role has generated tension; as such, your immediate suspension is required to facilitate urgent resolution processes.

“On this note, you are to refrain from engaging in any official duties or community decisions in relation to the FCT Administration until further notice. This will enhance the resolution process and determine the best path toward prioritising community interests. Accept the assurances of our best regards.”

Reacting to the development via telephone on Wednesday night, the suspended village head denied involvement in any land dispute bordering the FCT and Niger State, though he declined to comment further.

“All I can tell you is that the allegation that I engaged in a land dispute between my jurisdiction and Niger State is not true. That is all I can say for now,” he said.
