How Nigeria can qualify for World Cup via playoffs

•Coach Chelle and Super Eagles players

Despite beating helpless Benin Republic by 4-0, Nigeria is yet to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup but remains in contention through the playoffs route.

The Super Eagles are among four African teams that have qualified for the upcoming African Playoffs slated between 13th and 16th November at a venue to be announced by CAF, reports Daily Trust.

The mini tournament will produce one team that will advance to the Inter-Confederation Playoffs.

Playoffs Format

The African Playoffs will feature a semi-final and final format involving four teams Viz: Gabon vs Nigeria, And, Cameroon vs DR. Congo.

The highest ranked team based on FIFA standings will play the least ranked team.

The winner of the final will advance to the Inter-Confederation Playoffs, where teams from five continents will compete for the final two spots at the 2026 World Cup to be hosted by Canada, USA and Mexico.

The inter-confederation play-offs will be conducted in March next year, with six teams from five confederations playing for the final two spots at the World Cup.

For Nigeria to participate at the Confederation playoffs, it must pick the ticket from the CAF zone.
