BREAKING: Bandits demand N1billion ransom for kidnapped church worshippers

Gunmen who abducted eight worshippers from the Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA) in Omugo, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, have demanded a ransom of N1 billion for their release.

The Pastor-in-Charge of the church, Toba Omole, disclosed this while speaking with journalists, confirming that the victims remain in captivity days after the incident.

The abductees, including the pastor’s wife, were taken during a Sunday worship service after the attackers reportedly fired shots into the air, causing panic among congregants before whisking away their victims, reports Vanguard.

Omole said the kidnappers made contact with the community yesterday, allowing them to speak briefly with the captives before stating their demand.

“This morning, we were able to hear from those who were abducted. I heard my wife’s voice and those of other members,” he said.

“About eight of them are still in captivity, and the kidnappers have demanded N1 billion for their release.”

He appealed to the Kwara State Government and the public for assistance, stressing that the amount demanded is beyond the community’s capacity.

“This is far beyond what we can afford. We are appealing for help and intervention, including efforts toward negotiation to secure their release,” he added.

The cleric acknowledged the response of security personnel, noting that soldiers visited the community after the incident and provided temporary protection.

“We appreciate the security operatives who came around and stayed with us for some time to ensure calm in the community,” he said.

He, however, called for sustained security presence, noting that residents remain concerned as the victims are still in captivity.

The incident has heightened anxiety in the area, with residents urging authorities to intensify efforts to secure the safe return of the abducted worshippers.
