Lagos intensifies raid on street beggars, urchins

The FrontierThe FrontierJanuary 7, 2026 780 Minutes read0

The Lagos State Government has intensified its clampdown on street beggars and urchins across major parts of the state, including the Lekki–Ajah Expressway, as part of efforts to restore order and ensure public safety.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in an update shared via his X.com page today, noting that the raid was ongoing and covered other strategic locations across Lagos.

According to the commissioner, the enforcement exercise is aimed at keeping roads and public spaces clear, reducing safety risks to motorists and pedestrians, and maintaining environmental sanity in the state.

He wrote, “The raid on street beggars and urchins has continued along the Lekki–Ajah Expressway and in other parts of Lagos, as part of ongoing enforcement efforts to restore order, ensure public safety, and keep our roads and public spaces clear.”

The Lagos State Taskforce on Tuesday arrested 32 street urchins, popularly known as ‘Omotaku’, during a coordinated enforcement operation across major roads on the Island and Mainland.
