Doctors withdraw services in Edo, demand release of kidnapped colleagues

•Doctors protest

The Edo State Chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has announced withdrawal of its services across the State’s hospitals with effective from tomorrow, Saturday, January 10, 2026.

This is even as the union demanded the release of two of its members: Dr. Abu Ibrahim Babatunde, and Dr. Stephen Osamaye, who were abducted on January 1 and 2, reports Daily Trust.

Dr. Abu, a staff member of the Edo State University Teaching Hospital, was kidnapped in Auchi, while Dr. Stephen Irrua, works at Specialist Teaching Hospital, was kidnapped at Illeh road, Ekpoma.

The State NMA Chairman, Dr. Eustace Oseghale, in a statement, said the withdrawal of services is a direct consequence of the abduction of their colleagues and a reflection of the heightened sense of vulnerability among medical practitioners in the state.

“The NMA is calling for immediate intervention to secure the release of the abducted doctors and implement measures to prevent future incidents.

“This incident raises concerns about healthcare professionals’ safety in Edo State, threatening their lives and undermining healthcare delivery.”

According to him, among the association’s demand included enhanced security protocols for Edo State residents, regular engagement between NMA Edo and the Edo State Government on security concerns, among others.

He explained that the union would continue to withhold services statewide until it demands were met.

He noted that a safe working environment is crucial for healthcare providers.

“We urge a swift resolution and the safe return of our colleagues. Security operatives should take this seriously, as they will be held responsible for the consequences of our action.” Oseghale said.
