Former Supper Eagles captain Troost-Ekong seals move to Qatar Stars League with Al Ahli SC contract

The FrontierThe FrontierJanuary 21, 2026 1291 Minutes read0

Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has joined Qatari side Al Ahli SC, signing a contract until June 2028.

The move marks a fresh chapter for the 32-year-old defender, who arrives from Saudi Pro League club Al Kholood, where he served as a defensive lynchpin over the past 18 months, reports AFP.

Doha, Qatar in a major January transfer window development, William Troost-Ekong, the former captain of Nigeria’s national football team, has put pen to paper with Al Ahli SC, as the Qatar Stars League club continues its bid to bolster its defensive foundation ahead of the season’s second half.

Ekong centre-back signed a deal that ties him to the Brigadiers until the summer of 2028, bringing leadership and vast international experience to a club currently sitting mid-table in the Qatari top flight.

Al Ahli announced the signing through their official social media with the message: “He’s here, he’s ready welcome to the club William. Let’s make history together.”

Ekong’s arrival caps off a significant stint at Saudi Arabia’s Al Kholood, where he made nearly 50 appearances, captained the side and helped the club maintain its top-flight status.

His calm composure, aerial presence and organisational skills will be essential assets as Al Ahli aim to climb the league standings and secure a stronger finish this term.

The rugged centre-half, who was once one of the mainstays of Nigeria’s defence and led the Super Eagles with distinction, had recently retired from international duty to focus fully on his club career.

Ekong’s decorated career includes over 80 international caps and leadership roles across Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifying campaigns.

Fans in Doha and back home in Nigeria will be keenly watching how the veteran adapts to his new surroundings. With his experience in European leagues and Middle Eastern football, Troost-Ekong’s arrival is widely viewed as a statement signing for Al Ahli one that blends pedigree with a hunger to elevate the club’s ambitions in domestic competition.
