Ohanaeze declares every last Saturday of January as Igbo Adoration and Thanksgiving Day

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has declared the last Saturday of every January as the Igbo Adoration and Thanksgiving Day.

This was part of the resolutions of the organisation’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held yesterday, Tuesday, January 20, 2026.

A statement released after the meeting, signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Dr Ezechi Chukwu, said the decision followed an appeal by the Igbo College of Bishops, represented at the NEC meeting by Archbishop David Onuoha and Archbishop Sosthenes Eze of the Owerri and Enugu Anglican Provinces, respectively, among other clerics.

“The appeal, which is as a result of its spiritual symbolism, sought a revision of the earlier resolution adopted by the Imeobi Ohanaeze meeting held on 23rd December in Enugu, which had proposed the last Sunday of January for the observance.

“Consequently, the NEC resolved that the celebration be held on the last Saturday of every January instead. Imeobi says it would be communicated in its next meeting”, Chukwu said

He added that the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator Azuta Mbata, had at the meeting urged Ndigbo at home and in the Diaspora to appreciate the deep significance of this symbolic day.

Mbata, according to him, described it as a moment of collective gratitude to God for His enduring mercies and grace upon the Igbo nation, despite the numerous challenges encountered over the decades.

“Accordingly, all churches in Igbo land are requested to observe with commitment the maiden edition of this solemn event on Saturday, 31st January 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, with prayers, adoration, and thanksgiving dedicated to God.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide calls on all Igbo people to participate wholeheartedly in making this day a unifying spiritual landmark for the Igbo nation”, the statement added
