2027 elections: Top Nigerian politicians position their children in government •FULL LIST

The FrontierThe FrontierJanuary 29, 2026 3651 Minutes read0

•Wike, Umahi, Atiku and Obasanjo

As the 2027 elections draw nearer, a familiar pattern is re-emerging. Children of the powerful are beginning to walk in their parents’ paths and signal interest in contesting political positions.

Whether through party activities, appointments, or quiet positioning ahead of future contests, these moves have reignited debates about political dynasties, access to power, and the shrinking space for outsiders, reports The Guardian.

Here are some children of politicians who have shown interest in politics ahead of the 2027 elections:

Wike’s son:

The eldest son of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, Joacquin Wike, has recently attracted attention following his visible involvement in political gatherings linked to the Rivers political structure. Jordan is a graduate of Law who bagged a degree from the University of Exeter in the UK and a Master of Laws (LL.M) from Queen Mary University of London. He was recently called to the Nigerian Bar in September 2025.

He is said to be positioning himself for the House of Representatives seat representing the Obia-Akpo constituency in Rivers State.

Umahi’s son

In Ebonyi State, the son of the former governor and current Minister of Works, David Umahi, Osborne Umahi, has also emerged in political conversations.

His growing presence in party circles and engagement with political stakeholders have been interpreted by analysts as early groundwork for future ambition.

Umahi’s long influence over Ebonyi politics has made the development particularly noteworthy, with critics questioning whether political loyalty is increasingly tied to family lineage.

He has shown interest in vying for the local government chairman position for Ohazora local government in Ebonti State.

Atiku Abubakar’s son

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s son, Abba Atiku, has joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections.

His recent decision has sparked a discourse in the political space as he ignored the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a party his father is a member of and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Olusegun Obasanjo’s daughter

The daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Iyabo Obasanjo, recently became a registered member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State. This move comes after her last active participation in politics 15 years ago.
