10 coldest countries in Africa

The FrontierThe FrontierFebruary 12, 2026 2342 Minutes read0

Africa and its countries are often associated with scorching deserts and tropical heat, but the continent’s climate is far more diverse than many people realise.

From snow-capped mountains to cool highland plateaus, several African countries experience surprisingly low temperatures, especially at high elevations and during winter months, reports Vanguard.

Here is a look at the 10 coldest countries in Africa, based on typical temperature ranges and long-term climate patterns.

1. Lesotho 🇱🇸 (0°F to 82°F)

Lesotho is widely regarded as the coldest country in Africa due to its exceptionally high elevation—earning it the nickname “The Kingdom in the Sky.” Winter temperatures can drop below freezing, with snow common in the highlands. Lesotho remains Africa’s coldest nation overall.

2. Morocco 🇲🇦 (17°F to 104°F)

Morocco surprises many with its cold mountain regions. The Atlas Mountains regularly experience snowfall, while desert areas can be extremely hot during the day and cold at night, creating a wide temperature range.

3. South Africa 🇿🇦 (3.2°F to 104°F)

South Africa’s climate varies dramatically by region. While coastal cities are mild, inland and mountainous areas can experience freezing temperatures, especially in winter. The Drakensberg Mountains often receive snow.

4. Tanzania 🇹🇿 (59°F to 68°F in highland regions)

Despite being near the equator, Tanzania has cool temperatures in its highlands and around Mount Kilimanjaro. The mountain’s summit is permanently snow-capped, and surrounding regions can feel chilly, especially at night.

5. Kenya 🇰🇪 (0°F to 77°F)

Kenya’s high-altitude regions, such as the Aberdare Range and Mount Kenya, can be very cold, with occasional frost. Meanwhile, coastal areas remain warm, creating a sharp contrast within the country.

6. Uganda 🇺🇬 (50°F to 90°F)

Uganda’s climate is mostly tropical, but elevated regions and nighttime temperatures can be cool. Its highlands and proximity to large lakes help moderate temperatures.

7. Democratic Republic of the Congo 🇨🇩 (50°F to 90°F)

The DRC is largely tropical, but its eastern highlands and mountainous areas can experience cooler temperatures. Dense rainforests and altitude variations shape its climate.

8. Ethiopia 🇪🇹 (41°F to 50°F in highlands)

Ethiopia’s vast highland plateaus make it one of the coolest countries in Africa. Cities like Addis Ababa enjoy mild to cool temperatures year-round, with chilly nights common.

9. Algeria 🇩🇿 (63°F to 91°F)

Although dominated by the Sahara Desert, Algeria’s northern regions and highlands experience cooler Mediterranean conditions. Desert areas also experience dramatic drops in temperature at night.

10. Tunisia 🇹🇳 (43.5°F to 50.7°F)

Tunisia’s Mediterranean climate brings cooler winters, especially in the north. Mountainous regions can experience frost, while coastal areas remain relatively mild.
