INSIDE AKWA IBOM TODAY: Governor Eno delivers Home of Love, Leisure & Hope for Senior Citizens

The FrontierThe FrontierMarch 8, 2026 1521 Minutes read0

•Governor Umo Eno, First Lady Remi Tinubu and and Elderly woman

UTIBE-IMA OKON, Uyo reporting

Caring for the elderly means more than providing shelter; it involves creating a safe environment, supporting their health, and giving them the emotional care they need to live with dignity.

In Akwa Ibom State, this responsibility has become a priority under the administration of Governor Umo Eno. Since assuming office in 2023, the governor has shown deep concern for the welfare of elderly citizens, including widows and widowers who often struggle after losing their loved ones.

One of the major programmes supporting this vision is the ARISE Initiative for the Elderly, through which hundreds of senior citizens receive a monthly stipend of ₦50,000 to help them meet their daily needs. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that elderly citizens live comfortably and with dignity.

The idea of establishing a dedicated centre for senior citizens was conceived by the governor’s late wife, Patience Umo Eno, whose compassion for the elderly inspired the project. Her vision was to create a place where older citizens could gather, relax, receive care, and enjoy meaningful social interaction. Today, that vision has taken shape in the ARISE Senior Citizens Centre, located in Itak in Ikono Local Government Area.

The centre is an ultra-modern facility designed specifically for elderly recreation, wellness, and social engagement. The 13-section complex includes a opmedical clinic, restaurant, library with internet access, recreational lounges, a fitness centre, game rooms, a chapel, and a multipurpose hall where elderly citizens can meet and participate in activities that promote healthy and active living.

The facility is designed mainly as a daytime centre that encourages interaction and well-being among senior citizens.

The ARISE Senior Citizens Centre was inaugurated on March 7, 2026 by Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu. The centre will provide comprehensive social support and care, especially for citizens aged 65 years and above.

For many elderly citizens across Akwa Ibom, this project represents hope and recognition. It shows that their contributions to society are remembered and appreciated.

Through the compassionate vision first conceived by Patience Umo Eno and the leadership of Governor Umo Eno, the state is creating a future where senior citizens are respected, supported, and given the opportunity to enjoy their later years with dignity and happiness.
