Woman delivers four babies at Federal Medical Center

•Mrs. Mufiat Olateju

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening maternal and newborn health services following the successful management of a complex quadruplet delivery at the Federal Medical Centre Abeokuta in Ogun State.

The delivery involved four babies born to Mrs. Mufiat Olateju, who was referred to the tertiary hospital while already in labour, reports Saturday Independent.

Medical personnel at the facility responded promptly to the high-risk case and successfully delivered the babies while stabilising both the mother and the newborns.

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Iziaq Adekunle Salako, after receiving a briefing on the case, directed the hospital’s management to ensure comprehensive medical care, monitoring and support for the mother and her babies.

According to the ministry, the hospital has commenced appropriate medical treatment while also providing counselling and psychosocial support to the family.

The ministry commended the professionalism and swift response of the medical team, noting that multiple births such as quadruplets are medically demanding and require specialised care and close monitoring.

Salako also stressed the importance of early and consistent antenatal care for pregnant women.

“Regular antenatal visits enable health professionals to detect and manage potential complications early, improve pregnancy outcomes and ensure safer deliveries for both mothers and babies,” he said.

The ministry urged expectant mothers to register early for antenatal care at recognised health facilities and maintain regular contact with qualified health professionals throughout pregnancy.

It further noted that postpartum counselling, including voluntary family planning services, remains an essential component of maternal healthcare, helping families make informed decisions about birth spacing and overall wellbeing.
