5 African countries offering visa-free access to all Africans visa

The FrontierThe FrontierApril 6, 2026 1221 Minutes read0

The Government of Ghana has announced plans to grant visa-free entry to all African passport holders from May 25, 2026, in commemoration of Africa Day.

The move makes Ghana the fifth African country to adopt a fully visa-free policy for African travellers, according to its Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The policy builds on a commitment made by former President Nana Akufo-Addo during his final State of the Nation Address in January 2025.

The announcement was made during a state visit by Emmerson Mnangagwa, with the government noting that while groundwork had been laid by the previous administration, full implementation is now being realised.

With this development, Ghana joins Benin, The Gambia, Rwanda, and Seychelles as countries offering visa-free access to all Africans.

Here are five African destinations currently open to visa-free travel for African passport holders:

Seychelles

Seychelles is widely regarded as a pioneer of visa-free travel, being the first African country to allow entry to all nationalities without a visa. The island nation is known for its pristine beaches, coral reefs, lush forests and vibrant Creole culture.

The Gambia

The Gambia has granted visa-free access to all African nationals since 2019. Popularly known as the “Smiling Coast of Africa,” it offers scenic river views, rich cultural heritage and a lively tourism scene, with Banjul serving as a key entry point.

Benin

Benin was among the first countries on the continent to remove visa requirements for African travellers. It is known for its deep historical roots, including the legacy of the Dahomey Kingdom and its connection to Vodun culture, with cultural festivals drawing visitors annually.

Rwanda

Rwanda offers visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to African Union member states, positioning itself as a leader in regional integration.

The country is known for its clean cities, strong security record and tourism attractions such as gorilla trekking, with Kigali often ranked among Africa’s cleanest cities.

Ghana

Ghana has now joined the list with its newly implemented visa-free policy. The country remains a major cultural and historical destination, with sites such as Cape Coast Castle and initiatives like the “Year of Return” attracting visitors from across the African diaspora.

The expansion of visa-free policies across the continent is seen as a step toward deeper regional integration and aligns with the broader goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
