Two Police officers arrested over death of motorcyclist as angry residents burn down Police Outpost

The FrontierThe FrontierApril 30, 2026 1081 Minutes read0

The Oyo State Police Command have confirmed the arrest of two officers following the death of a motorcyclist during an incident that sparked unrest and led to the burning of parts of the Kara Police Outpost in the Moniya area of Ibadan.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka.

According to the statement, the incident occurred on April 24, 2026, at about 11:00 a.m.

Preliminary findings indicate that the two officers, attached to the Kara Police Outpost and operating under the supervision of the District Officer, were allegedly conducting an unauthorized stop-and-search operation when they intercepted a 35-year-old commercial motorcyclist, identified as Sanni Salisu, reports Daily Independent.

During the encounter, the police said the rider suddenly developed what appeared to be an epileptic seizure, slumped on his motorcycle, and became unresponsive.

The officers reportedly rushed him to Modupe Hospital in Akinyele, where he was later confirmed dead by medical personnel.

The development triggered tension in the area, as some aggrieved residents, reportedly acting on misinformation and unverified accounts, attacked the Kara Police Outpost and set parts of the facility ablaze.

Police said three motorcycles and one Mazda pick-up patrol vehicle were destroyed in the fire, while one officer sustained severe burns during the attack.

The Command added that reinforcements were immediately deployed to the scene, leading to the restoration of normalcy.

The deceased’s body has since been evacuated to Adeoyo State Hospital Mortuary, Ring Road, Ibadan, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

In response to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, ordered the immediate arrest of the officers involved. The officers are currently in custody.

He also directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department to carry out a thorough investigation and ensure that anyone found culpable is sanctioned in accordance with the law.

The Command warned against the spread of false narratives on social media and urged members of the public to rely only on official sources for updates.

The Command reiterated its zero tolerance for misconduct, the police assured residents that justice would be served and appealed for calm as investigations continue.
