INSIDE AKWA IBOM TODAY: Governor Eno’s aviation revolution takes off today, By AmanamHillary Umo-Udofia

The FrontierThe FrontierMay 2, 2026 893 Minutes read0

Today marks a historic leap for Akwa Ibom State as Ibom Air launches its inaugural international flight from the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, formally opening the state to the world.

This milestone is more than a ceremonial takeoff; it is the clearest expression yet of Governor Umo Eno’s aviation revolution, an ambitious, forward-looking strategy to position Akwa Ibom as a hub for commerce, tourism, and global engagement.

From its early days, Ibom Air has stood out as a rare success among state-backed airlines. With a fleet of nine aircraft: two Airbus A220s and seven Bombardier CRJ900s with plans to expand to 19 aircraft by 2028, the airline has built a reputation anchored on safety, punctuality, and service excellence. Its steady expansion trajectory, including plans for additional aircraft, reflects a disciplined approach to growth.

At the operational helm is Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, George Uriesi, whose calm, methodical leadership has ensured that the airline evolves not just as a carrier, but as a strategic asset for the state.

Yet, the significance of today’s international flight extends far beyond aviation.

It represents the activation of a carefully constructed ecosystem. At its center is the newly completed international terminal at Victor Attah International Airport – modern, efficient, and designed to deliver a seamless, world-class travel experience.

Supporting this are complementary infrastructures including the aviation village, airport clinic, and the proposed Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility, all reinforcing Akwa Ibom’s ambition to become a regional aviation hub.

Crucially, this enhanced connectivity is a game-changer for tourism.

With Ibom Air now linking Uyo directly to international destinations, Akwa Ibom becomes significantly more accessible to tourists, investors, and global travelers. The Ibom International Convention Centre stands to benefit as a prime venue for international conferences, exhibitions, and high-level events driving both visibility and revenue into the state.

Hospitality also receives a major boost. Facilities like the Ibom International Hotel are now better positioned to host a broader spectrum of international guests, offering premium accommodation that aligns with global standards. Visitors arriving through Ibom Air are not just entering a destination, they are stepping into a curated experience of comfort, efficiency, and service excellence.

In the healthcare sector, the Ibom International Hospital gains stronger viability as a destination for medical tourism. Improved access means patients from across Nigeria, West Africa, and beyond can now consider Akwa Ibom for quality, affordable healthcare services.

Equally, the state’s sports and entertainment ecosystem stands to gain. With infrastructure such as the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium and emerging sports facilities, Akwa Ibom is better positioned to host international sporting events, concerts, and cultural festivals attracting global audiences and stimulating local economic activity.

What unfolds from this is a powerful value chain: aviation enabling tourism, tourism strengthening hospitality, and hospitality driving commerce. It is a deliberate, integrated model of development that aligns with the broader economic diversification scope of the ARISE Agenda.

In this framework, Ibom Air is more than an airline; it is the gateway through which opportunities flow connecting people, ideas, and investments to Akwa Ibom.

For aviation enthusiasts, today’s milestone is the realisation of a vision to build a world-class airline. For Governor Eno, it is a bold statement that strategic governance, backed by purposeful investment, can reposition a state for global relevance.

As Ibom Air’s inaugural international flight takes to the skies today, it carries with it more than passengers: it carries the promise of a thriving tourism economy, a growing investment landscape, and a state confidently stepping onto the global stage.
