Anambra restricts movement on Saturday for statewide environmental sanitation exercise

•Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State

The Anambra State government has announced a restriction of movement across the state on Saturday, July 4, 2026, as part of activities following Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s declaration of a state of emergency on environmental degradation.

In a statement jointly signed by the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, and the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Felix Odimegwu, the government said movement will be restricted from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. to facilitate a massive statewide desilting and waste evacuation exercise.

The statement explained that the exercise will involve markets, transport unions, youth groups, community leaders, churches and residents.

It will focus on clearing drainage systems and curbing uncontrolled sand mining, identified as major contributors to flooding and gully erosion across the state.

The government added that only essential service providers, including security personnel, health workers, ambulance operators, journalists, fire service personnel and others engaged in essential duties, will be exempted from the movement restriction.

“Government has warned that new building constructions must include mandatory catch pits for proper management of run-off water as stipulated by law.

“It also cautioned residents against dumping refuse in drains, building on waterways, erecting illegal structures, and encroaching on drainages and rights of way.

“Residents of the state are advised to fully cooperate with the exercise, as anyone who fails to comply will be prosecuted according to the relevant laws of the state,” the statement added.
