The wife of the Abia State governor, Mrs Priscilla Otti, has called for regular screening, sustained advocacy, and improved support systems for breast cancer patients as part of efforts to reduce the disease’s prevalence in the state.
Otti made the call today during the commemoration of the 2025 World Breast Cancer Awareness Week held in Umuahia, themed “Celebrating Strength in Every Unique Story.”
Represented by the wife of the deputy governor, Mrs Adaeze Emetu, she described the courage of breast cancer survivors as a “beacon of hope” and urged women to embrace early detection and preventive care to improve survival chances.
“We have been reminded that breast cancer affects everyone, regardless of age, ethnicity, or background. Therefore, get screened, show love, donate, share the word, and advocate for change,” she said.
“To those currently battling this disease, know that you are not alone. My support remains steadfast — I will stand by your side every step of the way. And to the survivors, your courage inspires hope for us all,” Mrs Otti added.
Speaking earlier, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Women Affairs, Mrs Chinenye Nwaka, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving healthcare access and supporting advocacy efforts. She described the event as a “call to action” to unite in the fight against breast cancer through awareness and early testing.
Also, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Maureen Aghukwa, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs Ogechi Oguamanam, commended the First Lady, the Ministry of Health, and partner organisations for their dedication to women’s health.
She urged women to prioritise regular medical check-ups and personal health awareness.
The event featured a health walk campaign through major streets of Umuahia by the governor’s wife’s representative, government officials, and advocacy groups to sensitise residents on the importance of routine screening and self-examination.
It was earlier reported in October 2024, that Otti launched a state-wide women’s health initiative, providing free breast and cervical cancer screening across Abia’s 17 local government areas.
In a similar drive in 2023, the Abia Ministry of Health, with support from NGOs, screened over 2,000 women during a week-long awareness campaign.
