Abure-led LP NEC reaffirms his leadership, rules out 2027 coalition

The FrontierThe FrontierMay 2, 2025 2281 Minutes read0

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Abure-led Labour Party has reaffirmed its support for the leadership of Barrister Julius Abure and the National Working Committee (NWC) elected at the party’s 2024 National Convention, while also announcing a disciplinary process targeting Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti and other members accused of anti-party activities.

This is just as the Abia State Governor had earlier dismissed Abure, saying he is living in a fool’s paradise for him to still be claiming to be the National Chairman of the party after the Supreme Court had sacked him, reports The Guardian.

At a press briefing today at the party’s headquarters, Abure read a series of resolutions reached at its meeting, confirming that the party’s 2024 National Convention—held in Nnewi on March 27, 2024—was duly notified to INEC and conducted in full compliance with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Electoral Act 2022, and the Labour Party’s internal guidelines and constitution.

The NEC ratified the list of ad-hoc delegates elected across the 36 states and the FCT and reaffirmed the validity of the convention and its outcomes, including the election of the current NWC. It described the Abure-led leadership as competent and capable of steering the party toward electoral success.

In a significant move, the NEC constituted a five-member disciplinary committee to investigate Governor Alex Otti and other members accused of undermining the party. The committee, chaired by Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi, has two weeks to submit its report. Other members include Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim (Secretary), Kehinde Edun, Mrs. Dudu Manuga, and Callistus Ihejiagwa.

The NEC commended the Supreme Court for its judgment on April 4, 2025, which upheld the supremacy of political parties and the validity of decisions made by their duly recognised organs.

Reiterating its commitment to peace, the NEC extended an olive branch to aggrieved members and urged unity for the overall interest of the party and the nation.

In a strategic declaration, the NEC ruled out participation in any political coalition ahead of the 2027 General Election. Instead, it resolved to rebuild, reposition, and mobilise towards electoral victory through strengthened grassroots engagement.

The Council also congratulated Chief George Moghalu on his emergence as the Labour Party’s candidate for the November 8, 2025, Anambra State Governorship Election following the party’s primaries in Awka on April 5.
