Activist Sowore meets former President Jonathan in Abuja, reveals what they discussed

Activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, has met with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja.

According to Sowore who disclosed this today via his X handle, the meeting centered around the detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Sowore said, “Earlier today in Abuja, I met with former President @GEJonathan (Goodluck Jonathan) to discuss the continued incarceration of Mazi @NnamdiKanu

“President Jonathan agreed that there is an urgent and compelling need to address this matter decisively and justly. I thank him sincerely for recognising the importance of resolving Kanu’s case in the interest of peace, fairness, and national healing.

“Particularly assuring was that he promised to meet @officialabat (President Bola Tinubu) to discuss this issue as soon as possible.”

Sowore had, on Wednesday, urged South-East governors, lawmakers, traditional rulers, and religious leaders to join the planned demonstration for Kanu’s release.

He revealed that he had reached out to prominent Igbo figures in the region, including governors, senators, and the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to join the movement.

“No more empty noise. Let @CCSoludo, @SenatorAbaribe, @alexottiofr, @PeterObi, and all others who claim to care step up and join us in person.

“Every governor, senator, member of the House, traditional ruler, priest, eze, Igbo person, and every Nigerian who believes in Kanu’s freedom should come out and do more than talk,” he had tweeted.

Subsequently, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar joined in calling on the federal government to immediately release Kanu.

Atiku, in a post on his X handle described Kanu’s continued detention as a “stain on Nigeria’s belief in the rule of law.”

Kanu is facing charges of terrorism, treasonable felony, and incitement before the Federal High Court in Abuja, all of which he has consistently denied. He has been in detention for years despite multiple court rulings ordering his release.
