Popular Nollywood actor, Alex Ekubo, has died at the age of 40 after a prolonged battle with cancer.

The late actor was one of the prominent figures in Nigeria’s entertainment industry, known for his film roles, modelling career, and public influence, reports The PUNCH.

Below are key things to know about the late actor:

Early life and background

Born on April 10, 1986, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Alex Ekubo hails from Arochukwu in Abia State. He is known for his tall frame, charisma, and strong screen presence. He is fluent in English, Igbo, and Hausa.

Education

He attended Federal Government College, Daura, for his secondary education. He later studied Law at the University of Calabar and also obtained a degree in Mass Communication from Calabar Polytechnic.

Breakthrough into entertainment

Ekubo first gained national attention in 2010 after finishing as first runner-up in the Mr Nigeria competition. The exposure became a springboard into modelling and acting, leading to a steady rise in Nollywood.

Acting career

He began professional acting in the early 2010s and has since featured in several notable Nollywood productions, including Lagos Cougars, Weekend Getaway, In the Cupboard, Dream Walker, Hire a Woman, Sugar Rush, Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons, and Fate of Alakada.

Over time, he built a reputation as a leading man in romantic comedies and contemporary Nigerian cinema.

Humanitarian work and recognition

Beyond film, Ekubo was involved in social impact and humanitarian initiatives. He was listed among the Most Influential People of African Descent Top 100 Under 40 Hall of Fame and has received recognition for contributions to entertainment and charity work.

He also received several awards over the years, including acting honours at the BEFFTA Awards, Screen Nation Awards, Best of Nollywood Awards, and international film festival recognitions.

Alex Ekubo was a well-known entertainment personality in Nigeria, with influence across film, fashion, and social advocacy, maintaining a strong presence in Nollywood and public life.
