Anambra governorship election: Umeoji floors Governor Soludo in poll

The FrontierThe FrontierFebruary 23, 2025 3361 Minutes read0

•Umeoji and Soludo

An opinion poll conducted by 12 independent research organisations has put Hon Chukwuma Umeoji ahead of the incumbent governor of Anambra State, Prof Charles Soludo in the November governorship election.

Umeoji scored 54.6 per cent while Soludo received 22.3 per cent of the poll conducted over a six-week period, reports The Nation.

The results were presented to reporters yesterday in Abuja by leaders of the Anambra Opinion Polls (AOP) which is the umbrella body of the 12 research organisations.

Umeoji is the Executive Director of Corporate Services at the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) and former representative of Aguata Federal Constituency, Anambra State.

He’s a member of the All Progressives Congress.

The overwhelming lead suggests that if elections were held today, Umeoji would likely emerge victorious.

Other aspirants for the November governorship election include: Sen Tony Nwoye who scored 15.8 per cent; Paul Chukwuma polled 4.5 per cent; owner of United Nigeria Airlines, Obiora Okonkwo scored 2.1 per cent and Barth Nwibe polled 0.7 per cent.

Members of the AOP which conducted the poll include: Tabuko Kennedy – Director General, Nigeria Democratic Research Institute (NDRI); Prof. Chika Udeh – Executive Director, Anambra Policy and Governance Research Institute (APGRI); Dr. Olufemi Adebayo – Lead Researcher, African Centre for Political and Electoral Studies (ACPES).

Mr. Gregory Nwankwo – National Coordinator, Global Opinion Polling Network (GOPN) and Mrs. Aisha Lawal – Head of Research, Independent Survey Group of Nigeria (ISGN).

Others are: Dr. Josephine Mensah – Regional Director, West African Electoral Research Council (WAERC); Mr. Ifeanyi Ezeobi – Convener, South-East Voters Awareness Initiative (SEVAI); Barr. Patrick Nnamdi – Project Director, People’s Mandate Survey Initiative (PMSI); Dr. Collins Agbasi – Head of Polling, International Political Polling Observatory (IPPO); Mr. Samuel Adekunle – Chief Analyst, The National Public Opinion Research Forum (NPORF); Mrs. Beatrice Okon – Research Lead, Africa Independent Media Polling Unit (AIMPU) and Dr. Richard Obi – Senior Fellow, Global Democracy Insights Group (GDIG).

Addressing journalists, Director General, Nigeria Democratic Research Institute (NDRI), Tabuko Kennedy urged all political stakeholders to recognise the credibility and neutrality of the poll as a reflection of the people’s will.
