Assault: NYSC withdraws corps members serving in Kwara school

•Youth Corpers

The management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has withdrawn all the Corps members serving at the Government Day Secondary School, Kulende Ilorin in the Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State.

About 10 Corps members serving in both junior and Senior arms of the school were reportedly withdrawn on Monday by the Kwara State directorate of NYSC following an alleged assault on a female Corps member serving in the school by some female teachers who accused her (Corps member) of failure to greet them.

It was further gathered that the Director General of NYSC, Brigadier General Y. D. Ahmed visited the school on Monday before proceeding to inspect members of the 2024 Batch C, Stream 2, at the ongoing orientation course in Yikpata, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State and ordered that all the Corps members serving in the school be withdrawn temporarily to ensure their safety.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of NYSC in the state, Oladipo Morakinyo confirmed the withdrawal of the Corps members serving in both the Junior and Senior Secondary Schools.

“Yes, it is true that all the NYSC members serving in the school have been withdrawn temporarily pending the outcome of investigation of the case by the panel set up by the government on the alleged assault on one of the Corps members.

“Though the Corps member assaulted is serving in the junior school, we have to withdraw all the Corps members serving in the senior school to protect them from being attacked”, Morakinyo said.

Recall that a female Corps member of NYSC (names withheld) serving at Government Day Secondary School Kulende was on Thursday reportedly assaulted by some teachers in the school for failure to greet them.

It was gathered that the female corps member was allegedly beaten and stripped by the teachers after scolding her for not greeting them properly.

The corps member had visited the school to collect her clearance letter but was allegedly assaulted by a teacher for “not greeting them properly.”

Eyewitnesses also claimed that the teachers attacked her, tearing her NYSC white T-shirt, and was allegedly joined by another teacher who slapped her.

Kwara State Government condemned the act and set up an investigation team to get to the root of the matter.

Kwara State Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo-Kawu, said that the state government condemned the alleged assault recently meted out against the youth corps member serving at Government Day Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin.

“The Kwara State Government has condemned the recent alleged assault against a youth corps member serving at Government Day Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin, who was assaulted by a teacher named Mrs Amuzat Fatima Nike.

“The act is unacceptable in the society and Kwara State as a whole, stressing that the state is known for peace and harmony and the state government will not allow anything to truncate the existing peace in its academic institutions.

“The Anti-Loitering Team of the Ministry and the Management Team of the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission have paid an unscheduled visit to the school to investigate the alleged assault case and calm has been restored”, she said.

“The commissioner however appealed to the Management of the National Youth Service Corps and all concerned people to be patient, remain law-abiding and perform their duties without fear, as the concerned teacher has been summoned and necessary disciplinary procedures will be taken accordingly”, the statement further said.
