Awujale’s death: Markets to shut down in Ijebu-Ode today

The FrontierThe FrontierJuly 14, 2025 1471 Minutes read0

Leadership of markets across Ijebu-Ode have directed all markets and shops to remain shut today, Monday, June 14, 2025, to mourn the passing of the Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebu land, Oba Sikiru Adetona.

A resident of Ijebu Ode who is also a close ally of Ajalorun of Ijebu-Ife, Mr Abiodun Adejare, told our correspondent this morning that the move by market leaders and other stakeholders serves as a mark of respect for the respected monarch, reports The Guardian.

He added that the decision was reached at an emergency meeting of the market leaders’ council in the state yesterday.

”Markets in Ijebu-Ode will be shut today as a mark of respect to our great King, who passed away on Sunday. May his soul rest in peace,” Abiodun said.

The paramount ruler died yesterday, Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91 years.

He reportedly died in the evening at his Ijebu Ode GRA residence in Ijebu Ode Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The news of Oba Awujale’s death came on the heels of that of the immediate past President, Muhammadu Buhari, who died in a United Kingdom hospital also on Sunday after a protracted illness.

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, confirmed the exit of the monarch in a statement on Sunday.

The governor described the exit of the foremost traditional ruler as an end to a great era.

Abiodun said it was indeed a double sadness that Oba Adetona joined his ancestors the same day that Buhari died in a London hospital.

Announcing the death, Abiodun said, “It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland.

“Oba Adetona joined his ancestors today, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that has significantly shaped Ijebuland, Ogun State and Nigeria in general.

“Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona was a remarkable royal father, who ascended the throne in 1960, marking the beginning of a transformative era for Ijebuland,’ he said.
