Use your vote to punish non-implementation of N70,000 wage – SDP chairmanship aspirant

•Dr. Obinna Simon

Chairmanship aspirant for Abuja Municipal Area Council under the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Dr. Obinna Simon, has urged council workers and teachers to use their votes to hold the current leadership accountable for not implementing the N70,000 minimum wage.

Simon lamented that with the current economic struggles and high inflation, workers earning below N70,000 cannot afford basic living expenses, reports The Guardian.

The chairmanship aspirant stated this in a statement amid ongoing protests by workers demanding the immediate implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage.

He expressed solidarity with the workers and emphasized the need for accountable leadership that prioritizes the welfare of its citizens.

“A hungry teacher can’t impact knowledge on our children and students,” he lamented.

“How can we expect our educators to deliver quality education when they’re struggling to put food on the table? It’s unacceptable that some teachers in the FCT earn less than N40,000 per month. We must prioritize the welfare of our teachers and workers,” he said.

Simon urged Area Council workers to come together and demand their rights.

“We must stand with our teachers and workers who are struggling to make ends meet. It’s time for us to demand better from our leaders and use our voter cards to effect the change we desire. Let’s elect leaders who will prioritize the welfare of our educators and workers, and ensure they receive a living wage that reflects the current economic reality,” he said.

The aspirant promised to prioritize the welfare of teachers and workers if elected in the February 21, 2026 Area Council election.

He assured that his administration will ensure that all workers receive their entitlements and benefits promptly.
