Confirmed: Top stars who won’t play at 2026 FIFA World Cup

The FrontierThe FrontierApril 1, 2026 911 Minutes read0

•Poland’s forward Robert Lewandowski

Football’s best players come together for the FIFA World Cup, but qualification is still a cruel filter that doesn’t spare anyone.

Several elite players will be noticeably absent as the countdown to 2026 draws closer.

The qualification route from Africa to Europe has once again demonstrated that when national aspirations are at stake, reputation and individual genius provide no assurances.

Many of these stars’ absences are a result of the national teams’ collective failings rather than their own bad performance.

Despite continuously performing at the top level of club football, players like Victor Osimhen, Robert Lewandowski, and Gianluigi Donnarumma are left out of the largest international competition.

Below are top players who would not feature at the FIFA World Cup come June:

Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi (Nigeria)

Nigeria was unable to go to the 2026 FIFA World Cup after an underwhelming qualifying campaign that saw them finish behind South Africa in their group and lose 4-3 on penalties to DR Congo in the playoff final. The Super Eagles suffered from poor performance against inferior teams like Lesotho and Zimbabwe, instability in the coaching department and internal management problems.

Robert Lewandowski (Poland)

Poland did not make it to the FIFA World Cup in 2026 after they lost 3-2 to Sweden in the UEFA playoff final and were eliminated. Their run of competing in the previous two World Cups (2018 and 2022) was ended by this loss.

Gianluigi Donnarumma, Alessandro Bastoni, Sandro Tonali, Federico Di Marco, Nicolo Barella, (Italy)

Italy lost 4-3 on penalties against Bosnia and Herzegovina in a 2026 UEFA playoff match, missing out on the 2026 World Cup for the third time in a row. Despite Moise Kean’s early goal, they lost due to a late equaliser and Alessandro Bastoni’s red card, continuing a trend of subpar playoff appearances.

Rasmus Hojlund, Christian Eriksen (Denmark)

Denmark lost a crucial playoff game against the Czech Republic on penalties (3-1) on March 31, 2026, after a 2-2 draw, and so failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Denmark’s qualification campaign was severely disappointing as they lost in the playoffs after missing out on automatic qualification despite being ranked first.

Bryan Mbuemo (Cameroon)

Following a 1-0 loss to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the African World Cup qualifiers play-offs, Cameroon’s “Indomitable Lions” were eliminated, preventing them from qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
