Couple in police net over death of 45-year-old man

•Police parade

The police in Ogun State have arrested a couple, Moses Mba and his wife, Florence, over the death of a 45-year-old man, Mark Kalu.

It was gathered that the couple had an altercation with the deceased on October 8, 2023, at Osiele market, Abeokuta, in Odeda Local Council of the state, reports The Guardian.

Spokesperson for Ogun State Police Command, SP Omolola Odutola, who confirmed the development in a statement, said the deceased allegedly sustained injuries during the fight until he succumbed to death on Saturday.

She said: “The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Odeda in Abeokuta received a report of an incident, that one Mark Kalu, 45, died on January 6, 2024 at about 7:00 a.m.

“It was alleged that the deceased sustained injuries during a fight on October 8, 2023, at Osiele market. The altercation took place in the market square between the late Kalu and a couple, Moses Mba, 50, and his wife, Florence, 40, leading to the death of Kalu.

“Efforts were made by the Babaloja of Osiele and the Igbo community leader to mediate and find a peaceful resolution.

“The suspects have been taken into custody to facilitate a preliminary investigation into the incident. The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre in Idi Aba for autopsy.”

Meanwhile, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has warned residents to refrain from circulating fake information, depicting Abuja as insecure.

Spokesperson for the command, SP Josephine Adeh, who gave the warning on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, said it was imperative that individuals refrain from disseminating unverified information from the comfort of their homes, as it may incite unnecessary panic in the FCT. She said: “Instead, we encourage the public to responsibly share any pertinent information with appropriate authorities.

“In Bwari, the Commissioner of Police, on January 3, diligently visited all communities in the region. During these visits, he engaged with community leaders, assessed security arrangements, and took proactive measures, including deploying additional personnel and an armoured police vehicle. Despite these efforts, concerns have been raised about perceived inactivity.

“However, we would like to emphasise that revealing detailed security strategies publicly poses a risk to their effectiveness. We appreciate your cooperation and urge citizens to exercise restraint in sharing potentially misleading or mischievous posts. N”Working in harmony with the police will undoubtedly contribute to a safer and more secure environment for all.”
