Court remands man in prison for macheting wife to death

A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Akure, Ondo state capital, has ordered the demand of a middle-aged man, Sunday Emmanuel, to Segede Correctional facility for allegedly macheted his wife, Linda to death.

The accused was also alleged to have macheted his three-year-old son on the head, with the intent to kill him, reports Nigerian Tribune.

The Magistrate, Olateju Odenusi-Fadeyi, however, did not take the plea of the defendant and ordered his remand at the Correctional facility in Ondo town, pending advice from the Department of Public Prosecutions, DPP, in the Ondo State Ministry of Justice.

The Magistrate directed that the case file should be forwarded to the Department of Public Prosecutions, DPP, for advice.

Emmanuel was arraigned on two counts charge bordering on murder and attempted murder.

The Police prosecutor, Inspector Josephine Awanna, told the Court that the defendant committed the offence on October 7, at Ogbeni Camp Ofosu in the Idanre Local Government area of Ondo State.

She explained that Emmanuel killed his 30-year-old wife, Linda by macheting her on the neck and cheek, saying the woman gave out in the process.

Awanna further explained that Emmanuel, after killing his wife, also attempted to kill his three-year old son, Sunday, by macheting him on the head, saying the boy sustained a life-threatening injury in the process.

The police officer revealed that the incident happened during a dispute between the defendant and the deceased leading to the killing of the wife.

The charge read in part: “That you, Sunday Emmanuel, m, on October 7, 2004, at about 5:30 at Ogbeni Camp via Ofosu, in the Ondo Magistraterial District, did unlawfully kill one Linda Emmanuel, 35, by macheting her on the neck and cheek and hereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable Section 319 (1) of the Ondo state law

“That you, Sunday Emmanuel, on the same date, time and place, unlawfully attempted with the intention to kill your son, aged 3, by macheting him on the head.”

The offences, according to the charge, contravene Sections 319(1) and 320(1) of the Criminal Code Laws of Ondo State, 2006 and the plea of the defendant was not taken.

Magistrate Odenusi-Fadeyi however, remanded the defendant pending DPP’s advice and adjourned the case till February 2, 2025, for mention.
