Christian Eriksen has officially departed VfL Wolfsburg by mutual consent, bringing an end to his spell in Germany three months after collapsing during an international friendly.
The 34-year-old Denmark midfielder was under contract with the German second-tier club through June 2027, but requested an early exit in order to return home to Denmark to be closer to his family.
Eriksen, who has not featured in a competitive match since June, experienced an on-pitch collapse during Denmark’s match against Ukraine.
The incident occurred five years after he suffered a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 against Finland, after which he was fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) that allowed him to resume his top-flight career.
In an official club statement today, Eriksen expressed his gratitude while outlining the reasons behind his departure.
“At the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark,” Eriksen said.
“I’m pleased that we were able to find a solution together.”
Wolfsburg managing director for sport Dieter Hecking emphasised that the decision regarding Eriksen’s future was left entirely in the hands of the veteran playmaker.
“Despite his short time here, he has left a lasting impression on his team-mates, our staff and the fans,” Hecking said.
Eriksen joined Wolfsburg as a free agent last year following his exit from Manchester United. During his single season with the German club, the 151-cap international made 34 appearances.
His extensive career also includes standout spells at Ajax, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan, and Brentford.
The early termination allows Eriksen to evaluate the next phase of his life and career from his homeland alongside his family.
