A child’s eyes and visual system continue to develop throughout childhood. Good vision is important for learning, reading, coordination and overall development.
Some vision problems may not be obvious to the child, which is why regular observation and appropriate eye examinations are important.
As children prepare to return to school, parents often focus on uniforms, books and school supplies. Eye health should also be part of the back-to-school checklist.

1) CHECK YOUR CHILD’S VISION
Watch for squinting, headaches, frequent eye rubbing, sitting too close to the TV or difficulty seeing the board or reading.
2) SCHEDULE AN EYE EXAMINATION
A comprehensive eye examination can identify problems such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism and ensure that the child is visually ready for school.
3) CHECK THEIR GLASSES
For children who wear spectacles, ensure they are clean, comfortable, undamaged and still providing clear vision.
4) ENCOURAGE HEALTHY SCREEN HABITS
Teach children the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes of screen or near work, look about 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
5) ENCOURAGE OUTDOOR PLAY
Balance study and screen time with outdoor activities. Regular outdoor time supports healthy visual development.
6) CREATE A HEALTHY STUDY ENVIRONMENT
Ensure adequate lighting, a comfortable reading distance and regular breaks during prolonged reading or near-work.
HAVE A CLEAR START FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR
Before buying the new school uniform and books, make sure your child can see clearly.
Healthy eyes support better learning. Give your child a clear start to the new school year. Check the eyes. Protect the vision. Prepare the child to learn.
