FEC directs citizenship curriculum development for Nigerian schools

The FrontierThe FrontierOctober 3, 2024 3241 Minutes read0

•Federal Executive Council meeting

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has instructed the Federal Ministry of Education, the Nigerian Education Research Development Council (NERDC), and relevant government institutions to collaborate with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) on creating a comprehensive curriculum for Citizenship Studies.

This was posted on the National Orientation Agency’s X account today, Thursday, October 3, 2024.

This initiative aims to enhance civic education for students, fostering a deeper understanding of their roles as citizens in Nigeria.

Citizenship Studies will play a crucial role in the educational system by addressing various key areas. It will provide students with knowledge about their fundamental rights and responsibilities as Nigerian citizens while promoting active participation in civic duties and governance processes.

The curriculum will also focus on building national identity and unity, encouraging pride and cohesion through an understanding of Nigeria’s cultural and political heritage.

Additionally, the curriculum will promote critical thinking, enabling students to analyze societal issues and develop solutions for national development.

Values of social justice and tolerance will be instilled, emphasising fairness and equality among diverse backgrounds.

Furthermore, it will cultivate leadership qualities and accountability in young Nigerians, while also enhancing their awareness of global issues from a Nigerian perspective.

This curriculum development is part of broader efforts to instill patriotism and ensure that future generations can contribute positively to the nation’s growth and stability.
