Messi shines as Inter Miami clinches first-ever MLS Supporters’ Shield

The FrontierThe FrontierOctober 3, 2024 2791 Minutes read0

Lionel Messi continued to display his brilliance on the pitch, scoring twice to lead Inter Miami to a 3-2 victory over Columbus Crew, securing the club’s first-ever MLS Supporters’ Shield.

Messi opened the scoring with a close-range finish, then added a stunning free-kick in first-half stoppage time to double the lead for the visitors, reports AFP.

Though Columbus Crew’s Diego Rossi halved the deficit, former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez restored Miami’s advantage after Cucho Hernandez scored from a penalty.

The win not only put Miami at the top of the league standings but also earned them the prestigious MLS Supporters’ Shield, awarded to the team with the best regular-season record.

This marks a major milestone for the club, which was founded in 2020.

For Messi, this is yet another accolade, bringing his total career trophy count to an astonishing 46 across both club and international football.

With this victory, Miami has secured home-field advantage in the upcoming postseason playoffs.

Speaking to the press, according to the BBC, Messi emphasised the team’s focus on the next challenge: “The first objective has been achieved, and now we have to think about what’s next. We have the advantage of playing the playoff games at home, which is exactly what we wanted.”

Inter Miami is now chasing another record as they need two wins from their final two league matches to break the MLS record of 73 points in a single season, set by the New England Revolution in 2021.

What This Means for Nigerian Football Fans

Messi’s latest triumph resonates beyond U.S. shores, captivating football enthusiasts globally, including here in Nigeria.

As the Argentine legend adds another chapter to his decorated career, young Nigerian footballers and fans continue to look up to him as a source of inspiration.

With Lionel Messi proving that age is no barrier to success, his achievements set a powerful example for aspiring talents in the Nigerian league and beyond, reminding us that hard work, consistency, and passion are keys to greatness.
