Governor laments low participation in voter registration exercise

The FrontierThe FrontierSeptember 3, 2025 1043 Minutes read0

•Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State

Nasarawa State governor, Abdullahi Sule, has decried the low participation of residents across the state in the Continuous Voters Registration exercise conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Sule lamented about the situation today in Lafia, the state capital, during the official flag off of the state’s All Progressives Congress grassroots sensitisation/voters education on the INEC’s CVR, and the celebration of the second anniversary of Aliyu Bello and Yairus Dagusa as Chairman and Secretary of the party, respectively, reports The PUNCH.

The governor who was represented by his deputy, Emmanuel Akabe while noting that recent data and statistics indicated that the state has so far recorded low participation in the ongoing CVR, encouraged the APC leaders and members to go to the nooks and crannies of the state to sensitise the people to register for them to be able to exercise their franchise during the 2027 general elections.

Sule further congratulated the state’s APC Chairman, Aliyu Bello and the Secretary, Yairus Dagusa, for clocking a successful two years in office, and wished them more successes in the years to come.

He also appreciated the past and present leadership of the APC in the state for their efforts in ensuring victory for the party in the past years, and urged them to continue to work together in unity and harmony in order to continue to take the party to greater heights.

“If you look at the charts that were published, Nasarawa State is still down below among states in the country, in the ongoing INEC’s CVR process.

“So, this is an opportunity for us to go back to our constituencies, our wards, our polling units and encourage our people to register so that they will be able to vote during the 2027 general elections,” he explained.

On his part, the Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Danladi Jatau, commended the party for the initiative to sensitise the residents on the importance of the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration, while calling on the populace to participate in the process and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards.

He also congratulated the APC Chairman and the Secretary on their second anniversary, saying that their efforts had stabilised the party in the state.

“Our population has skyrocketed, but our registered voters remain very low. I want to use this opportunity to urge the residents to go and register so that they can obtain their PVCs.

“The Nasarawa State House of Assembly under my leadership will continue to make laws and resolutions that would have direct impacts on the residents across the 13 Local Government Areas of the state, as well as support the state government’s efforts towards providing good governance for the people,” he said.

Recall that INEC began the in-person phase of its 2025 Continuous Voter Registration across Nigeria on Monday, August 25, 2025 and ended on August 30th following online pre-registration from August 18.

Earlier, the Nasarawa State APC Chairman, Aliyu Bello, while welcoming dignitaries to the event, disclosed that the leadership of the state’s APC had agreed to support any governorship aspirant chosen by Governor Abdullahi Sule to succeed him in 2027, irrespective of his or her senatorial zone in the state.

According to him, the decision was unanimously taken by the party’s executives in the state and has been communicated to the governor.

“As party loyalists, we are ready to accept any chosen governorship aspirant by His Excellency, Governor Abdullahi Sule. We have sat as a party and agreed to allow the governor to decide on who becomes our party’s flag bearer in the 2027 governorship race,” he said.

Bello further urged the people to take advantage of the INEC’s ongoing CVR to go out and register to exercise their voting rights during the 2027 general elections.

Our correspondent reports that the event had in attendance top APC leaders and members from across the 13 LGAs of the state; federal and state government political appointees, members of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Commissioners, LG Council Chairmen, among others.
