Thirteen years after his passing, the impact of Nigeria’s foremost literary icon, Chinua Achebe, defies fading.

In a fresh tribute to his memory, Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo unveiled a statue of the legend at Ugwunwasike Roundabout, Ogidi, in the Idemili North Local Government Area.

At the event, which was held yesterday, Soludo described the late author as a global symbol of excellence whose legacy continues to inspire generations, reports Channels TV.

Speaking during the unveiling, Governor Soludo said Achebe’s extraordinary contributions to African literature and culture earned him worldwide recognition, adding that his administration is committed to preserving the legacy of the celebrated novelist while creating an enabling environment that will produce more literary talents from Anambra and beyond.

“Achebe represents excellence and remains one of the world’s greatest literary figures. We will continue to support initiatives that inspire the emergence of more Achebes in Idemili North and Anambra State,” the governor said.

The event attracted government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders and literary enthusiasts, including the Mayor of Idemili North Local Government Area, Stanley Nkwoka, who described both Achebe and Governor Soludo as world-class figures whose achievements have brought honour to Anambra State.

Achebe, widely regarded as the father of modern African literature, gained international acclaim with his 1958 classic, Things Fall Apart, a novel translated into dozens of languages and studied across the world.

The unveiling of the monument is expected to further preserve the late literary icon’s legacy while promoting cultural heritage and literary tourism in Ogidi, his hometown.

Achebe died on March 21, 2013, at the age of 82, in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, after a brief illness. He was buried on May 23, 2013, in his hometown of Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area, Anambra State, Nigeria.
